Learning to Listen
Devotion for Tuesday, July 21, 2026
I am currently on sabbatical, and this was written before I left. Please pray for times of refreshing in the presence of the Lord.
John 16:13
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth…”
Holy Spirit delights in leading God’s people. Jesus did not promise that the Spirit would hand us a complete roadmap for life. He promised that the Spirit would guide us. A guide walks with us, directing us one step at a time as we learn to trust His voice and His character.
Attentiveness grows through consistent fellowship with God. Many people are waiting for a dramatic sign while overlooking the quiet ways God is already speaking through Scripture, wise counsel, conviction, and the gentle witness of Holy Spirit. A heart that regularly spends time with God becomes better at recognizing His voice in everyday moments.
Today’s opportunity is to slow down enough to listen. Set aside five uninterrupted minutes to read Scripture and ask one simple question: “Lord, what are You saying to me today?” Resist the urge to rush to the next task. Give yourself room to recognize His leading.
Reflection:
What distractions most often keep you from recognizing God’s voice? Remove one of those distractions today and intentionally spend five quiet minutes listening to Him through His Word.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for sending Holy Spirit to guide me into all truth. Help me become more attentive to Your voice and more willing to follow wherever You lead. Teach me to recognize Your gentle direction as I walk with You each day. Amen.
